An elderly couple from Brampton is dead after a small plane crashed in Brantford early Tuesday morning.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, the Piper-Arrow plane crashed at the Brantford Municipal Airport on Aviation Avenue at around 8 a.m.

Officials believe the aircraft went down sometime overnight.

The two occupants of the plane have been pronounced dead.

The victims have been identified by OPP as 81-year-old Mildred Chamberlain and 76-year-old Ronald Chamberlain. Police said they were husband and wife.

The Piper-Arrow was one of three planes that Ronald Chamberlain owned.

“Since the day I’ve known him, all he’s talked about are his three planes and how he wanted his granddaughter to be a pilot just like him,” said neighbour Steve Yuricek.

Neighbours described the pair as a loving couple.

“We will really miss him,” Cheryl Vandenheede said. “He’s been a lovely neighbour and Millie is such a sweet lady.”

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada has been called in to investigate.

“Some of the things we are going to look at is the weather, for one thing. The type of flying he was doing – was he doing instrument flying or was he using a visual approach,” Ken Webster, an investigator with the TSB said.

The TSB will also be investigating the maintenance history of the plane.
