An 8-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle driven by his father outside of the Ontario Science Centre Saturday.

The boy’s mother, 36, was also struck by the car and remains in critical condition at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, police said.

The incident occurred in a parking lot outside of the Science Centre late Saturday morning.

Sgt. Brian Bowman told CTV Toronto that police are still trying to determine how the incident occurred.

“The mother and the son had been let out in the area behind me and somehow, and we’re still trying to uncover how that happens, the vehicle was in motion, reversing, lost control and struck both the mother and the son,” Bowman said.

The boy was rushed to Sick Kid’s Hospital but died shortly after arriving.

Police said the parking lot was closed at the time of the incident. It’s unclear how the vehicle was able to enter the closed lot, police said.

Police have not identified the family and have not confirmed if the father will face charges.
