A six-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a truck in Richmond Hill on Friday afternoon, York Regional Police say.
The crash took place at around 12 p.m. in the area of Taylor Mills Drive and Newkirk Road.
The victim, a resident of Richmond Hill, “sadly passed away from his injuries at the scene,” said Const. Laura Nicolle.
Police said his mother was there when the boy was struck, and that he had been biking with other children at the time. None of the other children were injured.
According to investigators, the driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver was behind the wheel of a truck owned by a moving company. The president and CEO of the company released a written statement, expressing his condolences.
“Our management, staff and franchise family are deeply saddened by this tragedy and extend sincere condolences to the child's family and friends. Safety in every way is a number one priority for everyone working at Two Men And A Truck Canada,” the statement said.
The company is cooperating with police.
Neighbours were laying flowers at the scene on Friday.
"It's close to home and when it's a child like that it's terrible, you know? I'm feeling for the family," area resident Brenda McLean told CTV News Toronto.
This is the second child to be killed in a collision this week in the York Region.
"It's a reminder to motorists that these things can happen so quickly and devastate families and entire communities," said Nicolle.
