A six-year-old boy is dead after two vehicles collided on a road west of Orangeville Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened on Dufferin County Road 109 between the 5th and 6th line in Amaranth Township, Ontario Provincial Police said.

Two vehicles carrying a total of six people collided around 12:30 p.m. for unknown reasons.

All six were rushed to hospital by Dufferin EMS.

Several hours later, police said one of the victims – a six-year-old boy – had died of his injuries. The five other people taken to hospital are being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

“It doesn’t get any worse than this is basically what we’ve got here,” OPP Const. Paul Nancekivell told CTV News at the scene.

He said the engine from one of the vehicles was torn out by the force of the collision. He also said it doesn’t immediately appear as if road condition or visibility was a factor. However a technical collision team has been tasked with determining the cause of the crash.

Dufferin County Road 109 was expected to remain closed for several hours as police investigate the crash.
