Toronto police are investigating after a bouncer was shot in the women's bathroom of an upscale lounge on Tuesday morning.

Staff Sgt. Robert Brown told CTV.ca that police were called to the incident at about 3 a.m. after a male staff member of a club on 77 Peter St. was shot during a confrontation with a customer.

He said staff confronted the suspect about a theft. During the course of events, Brown said the suspect ended up in the women's bathroom and "words were exchanged."

At some point, the suspect "brandished a firearm" and shot the bouncer in the leg, Brown said. The club employee was rushed to hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male weighing about 90 kilograms. He's believed to be about 173 centimetres (5-foot-8 inches) tall.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 416-808-5201.
