A box containing human remains are those of 72-year-old Harley Walker, who went missing from his Cabbagetown home last October.
Homicide Det.-Sgt. Pauline Gray said dental records confirmed what investigators had suspected, that the body found in a square-metre box in the City of Kawartha Lakes on Thursday was Walker.
An autopsy determined the cause of death to be a stab wound to the chest, Gray told reporters on Monday.
Investigators believe the murder took place inside Walker's home. The senior was the city's 59th homicide victim of 2006.
The container holding the remains was found in a remote area near Lindsay. Pathologists examined the box over the weekend
Two weeks after Walker vanished, police arrested Mississauga resident David Reid, 46. He is charged with first-degree murder.
Police earlier said the two men met in a gay online chat room before Walker went missing.
Police thanked the public for their help in the case, saying the information provided was essential. Investigators, however, wouldn't say what led them to the area where the body was found.
A memorial for Walker has been scheduled for June 2.
