A two-month-old boy critically injured in an alleged drunk driving crash that killed his mother has not regained consciousness since the accident, his family says.
The boy, named George, was in a vehicle travelling along Highway 7/8 near Cambridge with his mother, father and grandmother when their vehicle was rear-ended.
His mother, identified as 29-year-old London resident Susana Dumitru, died of her injuries shortly after the accident.
The victim’s family told CTV News Toronto that George underwent surgery at SickKids Hospital to relieve pressure on his brain caused by severe head injuries. They said he has not woken up since the accident Sunday night.
George’s father Razan Dumitru sustained minor injuries in the crash and the victim’s family said he has not once left his baby’s side.
A woman who attended the hospital along with Dumitru Monday night described the devastating scene in the hospital to CTV News Toronto.
“Right outside our room, (we) just started hearing crying, sobbing…” Christina Battick said. “Just seeing this man completely destroyed, just having him say, ‘I lost everything. I have no reason to live’ -- it tore me apart.”
The driver of the second vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Ahmed Darwish, has since been charged with several offences including impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failure to provide a breath sample.
He made a brief appearance in a Kitchener courtroom on Monday where he was remanded in custody until he can appear again on Dec. 5.
The victim’s family said the Dumitru’s moved to Canada back in April. They said they’re currently trying to organize funeral arrangements so Dumitru can focus on his son.
