Police are investigating the sudden, mysterious death of a two-year-old child in the Victoria Park and Lawrence Avenue area Friday.

An autopsy into what caused the death is scheduled for Saturday morning.

The toddler was found with no vital signs around 11 a.m. The child was pronounced dead at the scene after resuscitation attempts failed.

The family lived in a fourth-floor apartment.

Residents were shocked about the news. Some neighbours, who declined to be named, said that they had overheard the child’s mother say the death may have been related to this week’s heat wave.

The child’s name and gender have not been identified.

Homicide officers have been informed of the death, but that is standard procedure when a child under five is found dead, reported CTV Toronto’s Alicia Markson.

The scene at the Scarborough apartment complex was grim as police interviewed the family and neighbours. At one point, an ambulance supervisor on the scene wept openly about the death.

A woman, believed to be the child’s mother, was seen leaving the apartment building while a police officer carried another child, believed to be a sister of the deceased toddler.
