Toronto police suspect arson after two fires broke out in the same north-end apartment overnight.

Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at 160 Chalkfarm Dr., a Toronto Public Housing building located near Jane Street and Wilson Avenue, shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Police said a mattress had been set on fire in the building's 12th floor hallway, filling the area with heavy black smoke.

Two people were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. A baby also from the building is in good health, police said.

Residents of 21 units on the building's 12th floor were evacuated and given temporary housing overnight.

A short time later a second fire broke out in a 3rd floor garbage chute in the same building.

No injuries were reported in the second blaze.

No one is in custody, but police believe the fires may have been started by the same person.

Police are going through extensive amounts of video from the building's security cameras.
