Peel Regional Police have arrested a 15-year-old youth in the fatal stabbing of Brampton teen Ravi Rajiv Dharamdial.

That individual made a brief court appearance in Brampton on Wednesday afternoon, where he was charged with first-degree murder. His identity is protected under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He will be back in court on Thursday.

Dharamdial's family showed up for the court appearance. "I feel worse than yesterday when I put my son in a coffin," Rajiv's mother Sunita told reporters.

Const. J.P. Valade, a media spokesperson for the service, wouldn't tell ctvtoronto.ca if the suspect turned themselves in or if they were arrested.

"I can't get into those specifics," he said. "Because it's still a very active investigation, I'm very limited in what I can discuss. I can tell you the investigation isn't over. We're still pursuing a number of avenues."

Dharamdial, 14, had been walking with two friends on Oct. 14 when their paths separated.

Those teens say they saw two teenaged suspects follow the Grade 9 student as he walked home from school. At some point, his assailants attacked and stabbed Dharamdial, who called 911 from his cellphone as he lay dying.

Ravi's parents buried their son on Tuesday in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Relatives at the funeral called on the parents of the suspects to turn their sons in.

Police are requesting the public's help in this investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3205. Witnesses may also leave an anonymous tip by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
