A Campbellford man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a senior in that community.

Family members found Lillian Beryl Nicholas, 82, dead in her home on Aug. 13, OPP Const. Peter Leon told CTVNews.ca on Monday.

The hamlet of Campbellford is located about 25 kilometres north of Trenton.

Police located a grey, four-door 2009 Pontiac G3 that had been abandoned on Aug. 14, the morning after Nicholas's slaying. Leon said the vehicle had been carefully searched by OPP investigators.

"It formed a key piece of the investigation," he said.

However, he added that the investigation continues.

"There are still people to be spoken to. Information is still coming in from the public with respects to sightings of that vehicle, which is very helpful in helping our investigators fill in some of the timelines," he said.

There are gaps between when Nicholas was last seen alive and when her family discovered her body, Leon said.

In the meantime, OPP officers took James Patrick Van Dusen, 20, into custody Sunday night without incident. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

Van Dusen was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg Monday.
