Toronto Police have announced an arrest following a Remembrance Day assault in the Don Jail.

Over the lunch hour on Nov. 11, a prisoner was allegedly assaulted by another prisoner.

Kevin Pereira, who had been awaiting trial on drug-dealing charges, was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition, police said Monday in a news release.

"On Thursday, November 12, 2009, Jason Gardner, 25, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault," police said. "He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at Old City Hall, room 111, 2 p.m."

The jail, located on Gerrard Street on the east bank of the Don River Valley, is a holding facility for short-term prisoners who are generally either awaiting trial or sentencing.

The beating comes only five days after 32-year-old inmate Jeff Munro was beaten to death. Munro, who had mental health problems and was a drug addict, was attacked after an alleged dispute over a bag of potato chips last Saturday evening, court has heard.

Three men have been charged with first-degree murder in Munro's death. Munro had been in the mental health wing. The area where the attack occurred had no security cameras.
