A man accused of stealing boxes containing funds raised from the sale of poppies appeared in court Saturday.
The suspect was arrested by two war veterans Friday night, after three poppy boxes were stolen from various Tim Hortons locations around the city.
According to police, the thefts took place on King Street East, St. Michael’s Hospital and 250 Yonge Street.
Nicholas Moorhouse of Toronto is facing charges after being arrested by two constables -- Const. Robert Romano-Peck and Const. Ed Otten -- who fought in Afghanistan and Bosnia, respectively.
The two constables told CP24 how disgusted they were by the nature of the crime.
“Personally, myself I think this is probably the lowest in terms of theft that somebody could do. Stealing from any type of donation box, especially this time of year stealing from a poppy donation box, it does hit home,” said Romano-Peck.
“Like my partner said, to see a crime like this, it’s despicable. It’s taking money from men and women who served overseas. It’s a good thing we got this back,” added Otten.
