TORONTO - A Toronto woman who said cupcakes and a stuffed animal are her only links to a gang has been deported to Chile.

Carla Campana, 24, was put on a plane to Santiago on Tuesday night, her lawyer Jeffry House said.

Campana -- who does not have a criminal record -- is accused of being a member of the Almighty Latin Kings and Queens Nation, also known as the Latin Kings. Toronto police allege the local chapter has been involved in firearms crimes, drugs and aggravated assault.

But Campana insists she thought the group's goal was to promote the advancement of Latin women and she didn't know about the group's alleged illegal activities.

She said baking cupcakes to fundraise for a new mom, and giving the baby a teddy bear is the extent of her involvement in the group.

Her lawyer has said she was a "probationary" member, and left after being told her role was to "sexually service" the men in the group.

Campana, who was not charged with a crime, lived in Toronto since she was a baby but never applied for Canadian citizenship.

She had been in custody since October of last year.

In July, an adjudicator at the Immigration and Refugee Board found Campana to be a member of a criminal organization. A deportation order was subsequently issued.

Section 37 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act states a permanent resident is inadmissible to Canada if they belong to a group that engages in organized criminal activity, such as gangs.

On Tuesday, a judge ruled that Campana would not suffer any irreparable harm if she was deported, but left the door open for her to return to Canada upon judicial review.

House said the case is ongoing in Federal Court and he hopes to take it to Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

"We say that people who exercise their right to freedom of association as we say she was doing, shouldn't be deported while the minister thinks about whether we're right or not," House said.

"The minister should make that decision and then we live with the consequences, but we shouldn't be deported before they decide."

House said just before her deportation, Campana told him she was "heartbroken." He said Canada is her only home, and she's being forced to live in a country she doesn't remember.

Campana's older brother was also involved in the Latin Kings and was deported to Chile as a result, House has said.

Campana has said her brother did not tell her about any illegal activities in the gang.
