BUFFALO, N.Y. - An Ontario man was ringing in the New Year in custody in Buffalo, N.Y., after he allegedly tried to smuggle ecstasy tablets and the drug Ketamine, better known as the date-rape drug, across the border.

The 18-year-old man was arrested at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge on Saturday afternoon, after agents found the drugs hidden in the man's jacket.

U.S. officials said the man told the border officers he was planning to shop at local stores.

But they became suspicious when they noticed an unnatural bulge in his jacket pocket.

Further inspection of the jacket uncovered two plastic bags containing more than 1,750 ecstasy tablets and a small amount of the date-rape drug.

The man faces U.S. federal charges of importation and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Officer Kevin Corsaro, with U.S Customs and Border Patrol said the man has been turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and will be held in Buffalo until he appears before a judge.

He is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and would not release the name or hometown of the man.
