Two York Regional Police have been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following an accident on Highway 407 in which one officer struck the other's stationary cruiser.

"The one out of the white car, serious injuries, they've both been taken to York Central Hospital (in Richmond Hill) and the other with minor injuries," OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford told reporters at the scene on Saturday.

The accident occurred at 3:24 p.m. in the eastbound lanes just west of Yonge Street.

The driver of the stationary white cruiser, who had pulled over a Honda for speeding, was outside his vehicle when it was struck by a brown unmarked vehicle. "The second vehicle, the unmarked police vehicle, it came up to stop. It slammed on its brakes and ran into the rear (of the white cruiser)," Woodford said.

The cruiser lurched forward, striking the officer. He suffered leg, back and elbow injuries.

It is believed both officers will be okay, but both vehicles suffered significant damage.

The white cruiser also hit the Honda, but the two occupants of that vehicle didn't suffer any injuries. The Honda driver didn't wish to comment.

"Usually on something like this, (police) will have a backup officer attend," Woodford said.

The accident left two eastbound lanes of the 407 closed so an OPP accident reconstruction team could study the scene.

The province's Special Investigations Unit has been notified. The OPP asks any witnesses to contact Const. Gagnon of the 407 detachment at 905-841-5777.
