Police suspect driver error may be the cause of a head-on crash between two TTC buses that sent 14 people to hospital on Friday afternoon.

The buses were carrying a total of 31 people when they crashed in an underpass near Wilson Avenue and Wilson Heights Boulevard at about 11 a.m.

Injured passengers and one of the bus drivers were taken to two hospitals with cuts, bruises and neck and back pain, said Const. Hugh Smith.

He said it appears that one of the vehicles had trouble making a sharp turn, but both buses will be inspected to see if there were any mechanical problems relating to the crash.

"When you see the collision … it is just an offset of a foot or two but it is a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time," Smith said on Friday.

The incident left the buses damaged with shattered windows and bent fenders.

The posted speed limit in the area is 20 kilometres per hour.

Smith said that it appeared both buses were adhering to the speed limit, but that serious damage can still occur at such speeds.

The crash is being internally investigated by the TTC since it occurred on private property, however police and the Ontario Ministry of Labour are also looking into the crash.
