A 60-foot, 100-year-old rotten tree fell in a west-end playground Tuesday afternoon, injuring two people.

Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation officials have closed The Adventure Playground in High Park as clean-up crews remove debris from the fallen tree.

Police were called after the oak tree fell onto a play castle around 3:00 p.m.

One woman went to hospital with a broken arm, while a 10-year-old boy suffered scrapes and cuts.

About 100 children were playing in the playground when the tree came down.

A Toronto Parks supervisor said trees are regularly inspected, but the oak that fell did not show signs of damage.

"There were no signs with this tree that it was going to be coming down," Kevin Bowser told reporters. "The crown of the tree was in healthy condition, there were no exterior markings on it."

Bowser said that recent heavy rains in the Toronto area could have put extra stress on the tree, which was rotten and almost hollow inside.

Parks officials inspected other trees in the park after the incident and decided one other is unsafe and will be cut down.

Much of the play castle was damaged when the tree fell and will have to be rebuilt.
