A two-year-old girl was taken to Sick Kid's hospital Saturday afternoon after being freed from the back of a locked car.

Police received a call around 4:30 p.m. from a passing pedestrian who noticed the young girl in distress.

The girl was locked in the back seat of a van near the intersection of Bonnycastle Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, said Staff Sgt. Murray of 51 Division.

Firefighters broke the window of the car and the girl, who was conscious, was taken to hospital as a safety precaution.

The child's father later arrived at the scene with two other adults and went with the girl to hospital. The adults were attending a nearby festival, said police.

Sgt. Kyle Petrie told CTV Toronto that these incidents happen at the start of every summer.

People aren't aware of how quickly their car can heat up, said Petrie.

"It's just so much more aggravating the fact that it's this hot out today and someone would do that," said Petrie.

The temperature in Toronto on Saturday reached a high of 26 C.
