Police released a few more details about a violent triple murder in Scarborough Village and asked anyone who had contact with the murder suspect before the attack to contact investigators.

During an attack involving a crossbow on Aug. 25 in the Lawndale and Argo roads area, three people -- two men and a woman -- were killed.

At a news conference Monday afternoon, police confirmed the woman died of ligature strangulation and one of the men died of a “crossbow bolt stab wound to the neck,” Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone said. Both of these victims were located in a garage at the scene.

Another man, who died of a “single arrowhead stab wound to the neck,” was located on the driveway near the garage, Carbone said.

A fourth victim -- a witness -- and suspect Brett Ryan were taken to hospital, but were later released. Ryan was then taken into custody. Carbone did not comment on the nature of their injuries.

None of the victims can be identified due to a publication ban, though that court order may soon be lifted, Carbone said.

Carbone also touched on the suspect’s connection with a condo on Queen’s Quay, near Lower Simcoe Street. The building was evacuated shortly after the bodies were discovered because of a suspicious package inside one of the units but Carbone said at no time was there a danger to the public.

“I will not go into the specifics as to what was located there. There were certain items in the dwelling,” Carbone said.

Suspect charged

Ryan was charged with three counts of first-degree murder on Aug. 26.

Carbone confirmed that Ryan was previously arrested in connection to robberies committed in Toronto and the Durham Region. Ryan was referred to as the “fake beard bandit” after more than a dozen robberies in June 2008 because he allegedly wore a fake beard.

He was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison in Jan. 2009.

Ryan may have been attending a local university, Carbone said, asking anyone who came into contact with him recently to come forward.

“Today in my message and my appeal to you is to have the public know and advise us if they have had any contact with this individual by the name of Brett Ryan between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. on the 25 of August,” he said.

“I would like to speak to coworkers,” Carbone continued without providing details on where Ryan may have worked. “I expect there are some people who have not yet come forward and this is my appeal here today to try and in fact reach out to those individuals.”

Ryan is expected to appear in court later this week.

The scene is still being examined and the investigation is ongoing.
