A 25-year-old woman has been charged after a car smashed into an Oshawa home and caught fire early Friday morning.

Shortly after 1:15 a.m., a Pontiac Sunfire crashed through the wall of a house on Bloor Street West, hitting a gas main.

Tenant Corey Gallacher, 31, his wife Caroline Berube and their two-year-old daughter were sleeping when the sound of the crash woke them up.

"I thought a train derailed," Gallacher told CTV Toronto. "I opened my door to a car in my living room."

Police said it is not clear what caused the driver to crash the vehicle, but the car then caught fire, and the fire spread to the home.

The house was evacuated, and everyone got out safely. The apartment building next door was also evacuated as a precaution, and no injuries were reported.

The driver fled the scene before police arrived, but the driver was found unharmed approximately 10 hours after the crash walking in downtown Oshawa, and was taken in to custody.

Police closed Bloor between Park Road South and Simcoe Road during the investigation, and Enbridge employees were called to shut off the gas leak.

Kaylynn Gaspar has been charged with failing to remain at the scene and dangerous operation of a vehicle. She was expected to make a court appearance Friday.
