Emergency crews were called to the scene after a pregnant woman began giving birth on a street in the city's west end early Saturday morning and then attempted to walk away while still in labour.

According to police, the woman was walking down Queen Street West near Lansdowne Avenue at around 4:50 a.m. when several people spotted a crying baby emerging from between her legs and called police.

Police say a cab driver and several other witnesses then held the clearly distressed woman down until officers and paramedics arrived.

The baby was then born on the street and the mother and child were taken to hospital via ambulance, where they remain in healthy condition.
