A 42-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a van that police say suddenly swerved from the road and mounted a sidewalk.

The woman was hit shortly at a Scarborough intersection before 1 p.m. on Thursday. Police say the van drove onto the sidewalk on Midland Avenue and struck the pedestrian and a traffic light pole at the intersection of Gilder Drive, just north of Eglinton Avenue.

EMS says she died on scene. The driver, a woman in her 30s, was also injured.

A witness who stayed behind after the crash until EMS arrived on scene says there were other pedestrians nearby at the time of the collision.

"(The van) went on to the sidewalk, hit the pole and hit the poor lady," Sinan Yukselin told CTV Toronto. "There were other people. Lucky people."

The impact of the crash hit the woman with such a force that one of her shoes was found approximately 30 metres from the site of the collision.

"I feel sorry for (this) person…I hope she doesn't have kids," Yukselin said.

It is not known why the vehicle veered onto the sidewalk.

Police will review video footage taken from a TTC bus that was in the area at the time of the crash.
