Police say a woman has been charged after a three-year-old girl fell from a balcony and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Const. Tony Vella told CTV News on Monday that police have charged a 24-year-old woman with attempted murder.

The woman remains in hospital. The girl remains in critical condition in Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, he said.

The incident occurred last Thursday at 915 Midland Ave., which is just north of Eglinton Avenue East.

Police were called to the scene at about 4:30 a.m. after the little girl was found on the ground below her sixth-floor balcony. She had suffered head injuries and required two rounds of emergency surgery upon arrival at hospital.

The accused barricaded herself in her apartment. Police broke in the front door while tactical officers crossed onto the woman's balcony from the neighbouring unit to enter her suite from there.

The woman was taken from the suite on a stretcher to Scarborough Grace Hospital.

Neighbours had previously complained about disturbances and loud behaviour in the woman's unit.

The woman was remanded by video on Saturday, which means she appeared before a justice of the peace to have her case spoken to, police said.

Vella urged any witnesses who haven't come forward yet to contact police at 416-808-4100.
