A Hamilton woman is facing charges after an investigation into claims made to the Ontario Disability Support Program.

Police said they were alerted to the scam in August, when case managers at ODSP noticed discrepancies in claims submitted by a Hamilton resident.

Officers worked with ODSP to investigate the case, and said they found evidence that more than $200,000 had been obtained from the program.

Police said in a statement Tuesday that a woman had "executed an elaborate scheme," telling the disability program that she had cancer and was being treated by a doctor.

She also reported that she was required to live in a hotel during treatment, the statement said. Officers said they found evidence that her claims were false.

Hamilton resident Sarah Lucas, 32, was arrested last week, police said.

Lucas has been charged with fraud over $5,000, two counts of identity fraud and two counts of use of forged documents.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact the Hamilton Major Fraud Unit at 905-546-3840. The public can also provide tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
