A Toronto woman is dead after she was hit by a vehicle in downtown Toronto early Wednesday morning.

Police said a 58-year-old pedestrian was crossing Sherbourne Street, south of Dundas Street, at approximately 1 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle. The driver then fled the scene.

Security camera footage belonging to a nearby convenience store shows the vehicle appearing to drive faster than the speed limit. The pedestrian, who was later identified by her son as Suzanne Pak, was struck out of the camera's range.

She was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

Pak lived in an apartment building across the street from the scene of the crash. Her neighbour, Wendy Jarvis, described her as a "really nice person" who was "involved in a lot to do with the building."

Police say they're looking for a four-door graphite lustre metallic 2012-2014 Acura TL. Const. Clint Stibbe told reporters that debris scattered at the scene will help investigators identify the vehicle, which likely has front-end damage.

He says given the impact from the crash, it's likely the driver of the vehicle knew Pak was struck.

"(There's) absolutely no way they wouldn't know with the amount of debris that was left behind, as well as the damage that vehicle sustained … and the type of impact it would have had," he said.

Residents in the area say a recent water main break on Sherbourne has forced pedestrians to walk on the road to avoid the water. Police say it's unclear if that was a factor in the hit-and-run.

Officers are canvassing the area for security video, and ask anyone with more information to contact police at 416-808-2222.
