Police reported several collisions in the Toronto area on Monday morning after a blast of winter weather left roads slippery and wet.

A section of the westbound Highway 401 was closed for hours from Guelph Line in Campbellville to Highway 6 (Brock Road) in Morriston while police and road crews cleaned up debris from two separate collisions. Two transport trucks jackknifed and another two ended up in the ditch due to slippery conditions.

The snow, which started falling on Sunday, caused a car to crash into a tree near Islington Avenue and Albion Road in Rexdale overnight.

Another vehicle skidded into the guardrail on a slippery stretch of Dundas Street near Highway 427.

Further east, a section of the Don Valley Parkway was closed for about an hour starting at midnight when icy conditions made the road unsafe. Salt trucks were brought in, and the lanes were reopened around 1 a.m.

Downtown, two vehicles lost control on the westbound Gardiner Expressway at around midnight.

The slippery conditions can be expected to continue through the day in the Toronto area, with temperatures expected to hover around 0 C.

Environment Canada predicts flurries through the morning and into the afternoon. Approximately 2 centimetres may fall in Toronto.
