A 32-year-old Whitby woman has been charged after she allegedly entered an elderly woman's apartment and stole her wedding and engagement rings.

Police say the daytime robbery happened earlier this month in a Whitby apartment building, located in the area of Mary Street East and Ash Street.

Police say on May 5 at approximately 4:30 p.m., the suspect knocked on the elderly woman's apartment door and asked to use her washroom. She claimed she had a relative in the building.

Once inside, police say the suspect stole a wallet, some medication and the two rings, which the elderly woman has owned for decades. The suspect was caught on security surveillance video and was arrested last week, police said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Police say the engagement ring has been recovered, but the wedding ring may have been lost in the area of Mary Street East and Ash Street. It is described as a yellow-gold ring with five diamonds.

Tara Heffering has been charged with theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and failure to comply with probation orders.
