A man is dead after a wheel flew off an SUV on a highway north of Toronto on Monday and struck the windshield the minivan he was driving.
Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the incident, which occurred on Highway 400 near Bayfield Street, north of Barrie, at about 10:45 a.m.
The front driver-side wheel of a southbound Nissan Murano dislodged, bounced over the barrier and flew into oncoming traffic, said Sgt. Dave Woodford.
The wheel struck the windshield of a northbound Dodge Caravan, injuring the driver. The male victim was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Northbound lanes of Hwy. 400 were closed at Bayfield Street were closed for much of the day but reopened shortly before 4 p.m.
