MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Ontario's police watchdog says an officer with Waterloo Regional Police won't be facing charges for shooting a suspect in April.

The Special Investigations Unit says the unnamed female officer was justified in firing the non-fatal shot after Wesley LaForme used a knife to attack both the officer and his ex-girlfriend.

Police were called to his former partner's home on April 30, shortly after she had ended her relationship with LaForme.

As police arrived, the SIU says LaForme began stabbing his ex-girlfriend repeatedly, then stabbed the officer in the leg when she tried to manually disarm him.

The SIU concluded that the officer acted in both self-defence and the defence of someone else, adding her actions may have saved a life.

The Special Investigations Unit is an arm's-length organization that probes any police interactions in which someone is killed or injured.
