A suspect in a downtown Toronto hit-and-run Monday that left one man dead was captured on video wiping down a vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot.

The vehicle was later found abandoned by police.

Steven Doyle, 27, was killed after he was struck by a vehicle on the sidewalk along George Street, south of Gerrard Street, at around 5:45 p.m. on Monday.

A blue Dodge Caravan fled the scene following the collision.

Det. Steven Henkel told reporters Wednesday the vehicle was located by police a short time later, parked near 285 Shuter Street, more than a kilometre away from where the collision occurred.

Investigators believe that the driver intentionally struck Doyle, a father known in the Regent Park neighbourhood as ‘Steve-O.’

In the video released by investigators Wednesday, a man with long dark hair tied into a bun is seen taking off a dark-coloured athletic jacket before entering the driver’s area of a blue Dodge Caravan and wiping the console, door and wheel. Police he was likely being "evidence conscious" and wiping away fingerprints.

Henkel said the suspect then fled the scene heading towards Berkeley Street.

Police have also obtained video footage capturing the exact moment of the collision that killed Doyle, but that footage will not be released to the public, Henkel said.

One woman who witnessed the incident told CP24 that the vehicle ran over the man following a dispute over drugs. Henkel said while police were aware of that theory, they could not say what sparked the incident.

“It may have been a robbery; it may have been a dispute concerning another incident.”

Henkel says Doyle was in the company of another man around the time he was struck and killed and investigators would like to identify and speak to that man.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation and police are still looking for the driver. He is described as having brown skin with a light complexion. He stands five-foot-eight to five-foot-ten and has a slim-to-medium build, with dark brown, shoulder length hair in a long ponytail. He was wearing a dark shirt and prescription glasses with rectangular frames.
