Investigators have released security camera footage of two suspects wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a 61-year-old grandmother in a Riverdale alleyway over the weekend.

Peggy Ann Smith was with her daughter and two grandchildren at a residence that backs onto Don Mount Court, near Kintrye and Broadview avenues, on Saturday when gunfire erupted.

Smith, along with her family, attempted to run to safety but she was struck by a stray bullet and killed.

Det. Dave Dickinson said other families and young men were outside at the time “enjoying the summer evening” when two men approached the laneway and fired at least ten shots.

“I believe this shooting was targeted however I do not believe Peggy or her family were the intended targets,” Det. Dave Dickinson told reporters on Tuesday. “There were a number of young men outside in this laneway near where Peggy was shot and it is my belief that this group of men were the ones who were targeted.”

According to police, the two males were seen walking south on Don Mount Court prior to the shooting and running north on the same laneway afterwards.

The suspects were last seen at Dundas and Hamilton streets, in the Dundas Street and Broadview Avenue area, shortly after the shooting.

The first suspect is described as a male with a brown complexion who is in his 20s, and is approximately five-foot-six with an average build and a full beard. He was last seen wearing dark pants, a grey hoodie sweatshirt with the hood up and a black baseball cap.

Police describe the second suspect as a black male of Somalian descent who is in his late teens or early 20s, and is approximately five-foot-eleven with a skinny build. He was last seen wearing dark pants and a grey hoodie sweatshirt with the hood up. Dickinson said the suspect’s hoodie may also have had a dark band running horizontally across the bottom.

Dickinson said his investigation has led him to believe that a group of about five men who were in the area at the time of the shooting were the intended target.

He said he has spoken to some of the men in that group but is urging the remaining members to come forward and speak with police.

“I need the public’s assistance in tracking the movements of the suspected targets,” he said.

Dickinson added that investigators are aware of other violent incidents that have occurred recently in the area and are taking them into account.

“It’s obviously part of my investigation to look at those and see if they are linked but for right now I’m not going to comment on that,” he said. “Toronto police as well as Toronto Community Housing have been in this community a lot. They have officers assisting this community on a daily basis. Moving forward, there has been a heightened presence in this area to ensure that the community and its members feel safe here.”

At a vigil held Monday night in honour of Smith, her grandmother described her as a "good woman."

"She prayed for everyone," Savannah Smith told CTV Toronto. "She read her bible every morning when she woke up."

Smith's grandson said the family just wants justice for her.

"This tragedy happened when the sun was still up, (in) broad daylight," Jerome Smith said at the vigil.

Investigators are now trying to determine what happened after the suspects were seen in the Dundas and Hamilton streets area.

Dickinson said the security camera footage will help piece together a timeframe of the event but that witnesses are crucial to the investigation.

They urge anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident or anyone who may have information related to Smith’s murder to call the homicide unit at 416-808-7400 or 55 Division at 416-808-5500. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

“In my opinion, it’s a cowardly act,” Dickinson said. “She (Smith) was trying to get inside, as was everyone else in the area.”
