A man and woman have been taken to hospital following an apartment fire in Etobicoke late Friday morning.

Firefighters were called after a two-alarm fire broke out on the 11th floor of a high-rise building on Humber Boulevard and Weston Road just after 11:30 a.m.

Thick, dark smoke could be seen billowing from the unit as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

Paramedics said the male victim suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Toronto EMS said the woman was found just outside the apartment building and is also being treated for serious injuries.

The fire was contained to just one apartment but officials say there was some damage to the surrounding units.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
