The man who was fatally struck by an SUV in downtown Toronto overnight has been identified as a resident of a nearby homeless shelter.

A male resident of the Good Shepherd homeless shelter was struck while he was speaking with another man on the sidewalk in front of the shelter, on Queen Street East near Parliament Street, at approximately 1:30 a.m.

A black GMC SUV travelling west jumped the sidewalk, knocked down a street sign and a trash can, then struck a bike rack and a tree before crushing one of the men.

The man was rushed to hospital, but died shortly after. Police have not released the man's identity, but residents of the shelter said he was a man in his 60s named Kurt. Friends told CTV Toronto he'd been living at the shelter for about a week. The shelter staff are working to locate the man's family, but said they don't know much about him.

Police say the other pedestrian, a 48-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In the hours after the crash, the driver of the SUV remained on scene and was being co-operative with investigators, police said. It is not yet clear why the vehicle left the road, but police are looking at surveillance footage from nearby buildings as part of the investigation.

Second pedestrian struck by vehicle in unrelated incident

Further east, a 61-year-old man died of his injuries after being struck by a vehicle near Victoria Park and St. Clair Avenues at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday.

The man was walking across Dawes Road, on the north side of Gower Street, when he was struck by a vehicle turning left onto Dawes.

He was rushed to a nearby trauma centre, where he died of his injuries several hours later.
