A woman’s husband is among two men charged in connection with the death of a Pickering, Ont., woman whose body was found in the remains of a huge house fire last September.

Carmela Knight, 39, was found in the garage of a home on Pebblestone Crescent after firefighters responded to a 911 call.

Knight’s husband, David Knight, 42, is one of two people charged this week with first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and arson. Graham Thomas Macdonald, 28, is also charged.

Police say a post-mortem showed obvious signs of trauma to her body.

“Through the coroner’s office, we were able to determine there was foul play,” Dave Selby of Durham Regional Police tells CTV Toronto.

Although the motive is not clear, neighbours say the husband has moved out of the home before the woman died.

Neighbour Joe Sarta says there was “a lot of talk” when locals learned of the death.

“Now we’re shaken up even more today.”

Both men have appeared in court Friday. They are due back in court on March 6.
