TTC riders have until the end of October to exchange their adult tickets for tokens as part of a measure to reduce millions of dollars in losses due to counterfeiting.
Sunday is the last day the TTC will accept adult tickets as fare. Riders have until October 31 to exchange any remaining tickets they have.
Riders can only exchange tickets from Monday to Friday at two locations:
- Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Bloor-Yonge subway station.
- Between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Metropass Discount Plan Office, 1900 Yonge Street (street level at Davisville Station).
Riders can still purchase and use student/senior and child tickets.
About 65 million adult tickets were used in 2007, accounting for about 15 per cent of fares, the TTC says. However, the use of counterfeit tickets is on the rise and as a result, the TTC is losing between $3 million and $4 million in annual revenue.
Most recently, a collector at the Wilson Station ticket booth was arrested and charged in June for allegedly possessing and selling forged adult tickets.
In November 2006, the TTC issued a new token that was designed to thwart counterfeiters. The token redesign followed an elaborate counterfeiting scam that siphoned about $10 million from the transit system.
