The TTC is rolling out more than 50 new buses and ramping up service on dozens of routes in an effort to crack down on crowding during peak hours.

The service increases for bus routes across the city began Sunday, as part of a $95-million transit investment approved by Toronto City Council last year.

"These service improvements are the type of sensible and caring investments expected by Toronto residents," said Mayor John Tory in a statement

"We need a reliable transit system so people can get to work on time and get home faster to spend more time with their families."

In addition to the new buses, 24 routes will see service increases during weekday peak hours to "reduce crowding and waiting times," including the 25 Don Mills, which is the 11th-busiest surface route in the city with 38,000 riders daily.

"This year we will continue to make bus service on many of our routes more frequent and reliable, "said TTC Chair Josh Colle.

"Customers will notice this enhanced service with reduced crowding during rush hour, helping to make your bus ride a more comfortable experience."

Several other routes will also see schedule changes geared towards improving "service reliability."

Another seven buses will make extra trips during various times of the week.
