THORNHILL, Ont. -- Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will visit Thornhill today, a day after Premier Kathleen Wynne announced provincial byelections in the riding north of Toronto and in Niagara Falls.

Trudeau is to appear this afternoon at a media availability with Liberal candidate Sandra Yeung Racco -- the Progressive Conservatives are to choose their candidate tonight.

In Niagara Falls, city councillor Joyce Morocco will carry the Liberal banner, while the Tories have nominated regional councillor and former Niagara Falls MPP Bart Maves.

The New Democrats will nominate their candidates in both ridings this weekend.

Wynne announced the byelections will be held Feb. 13, less than a week before the legislature resumes sitting.

The byelections are to fill seats vacated by the retirements of Liberal Kim Craitor and Progressive Conservative Peter Shurman.

The results won't affect the minority status of the Liberal government, no matter which party wins.

However, they're expected to help determine which party has momentum as the province gears up for an anticipated spring election.
