A middle-aged woman is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal kitchen-knife stabbing of her older sister.

Police allege that the suspect stabbed the victim multiple times in the torso on the first floor of a home at Old Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West on Friday afternoon. The victim was later pronounced dead at St. Michael’s Hospital.

The suspect, 52-year-old Hoa Hong Nguyen, is expected in court at Old City Hall at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Detective Murray Barnes of the Toronto Homicide Squad told reporters on Saturday that investigators are appealing to anyone who knows the sisters “so we can get a complete picture of the dynamic of this relationship.”

Police say they have identified the victim, who was thought to be visiting from Vietnam, but will not release her name pending contact with her family.

Police first received calls around 1 p.m. Friday, alerting them of the incident, Barnes said. When officers arrived, the victim was found lying on the kitchen floor with obvious stab wounds, he said.

Barnes explained the second-degree murder charge, saying, “I don’t believe that there was any preplanning or any of the ingredients of first-degree. Conversely, this isn’t just an accidental death.”

Police now await a judge’s authorization to gain access to the home, which has been cordoned off by yellow tape.

“The officers were in there briefly at the time of the offence. We then left, so it’s been frozen since that time, but the officer did indicate there is a kitchen knife beside where this happened,” Barnes said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Barnes at 647-921-0743 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.
