A Toronto woman is using Facebook to ask for Christmas cards for her elderly mother, saying that the senior receives very few cards because many of her friends and family members have passed away.

Jane Gilbert posted a photo of her mother on the social networking site Sunday, saying the senior's favourite part of Christmas is checking her mailbox to see if she received any cards.

"One of her favorite things during the holidays is not the gifts or the food, it's checking the mailbox every day to see if, by chance, there is a Christmas card for her," Gilbert wrote.

The 85-year-old used to hang up every card she would receive, covering the walls and doors of her Toronto home, Gilbert said in the post.

Gilbert wrote that her mother is receiving fewer cards each year, as many of the senior's friends and family members have passed away.

The Facebook post had been shared more than 120 times by Monday morning. Several people commented on the post, promising to send cards to her mother.

"You can understand that at this stage in your life you want to make sure that you have not been forgotten," Gilbert wrote.

"So, if you can find it in your heart to send my Mum a card, even if you don't personally know her, it would let her know that she is not forgotten!"

Gilbert asked anyone willing to send a card to mail it to:
