The City of Toronto has ended its new anti-littering campaign, which insulted people who don't put trash in bins, before it really began.
Live Green Toronto, a City of Toronto program that helps people and communities go green, launched the ads earlier this month. The ads show food and drink packages on the ground arranged in a way to spell 'lazy', 'selfish', 'dumb' and 'lowlife'. The tag line reads "Littering says a lot about you."
Many people took to social media over the past couple days to applaud the campaign and express their displeasure with seeing trash on sidewalks or parks.
However the city is pulling the ads because the companies featured weren't too happy to see their wrapping portrayed in a negative light.
"Concerns were subsequently raised by various companies about the use of their trade-marks and the potentially negative effect that this campaign might have on their brands," City of Toronto spokesperson Siobhan Ramsay told CTV Toronto in an email. "Even though the affected companies have indicated their support for the City's anti-littering initiatives."
