Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista sat out Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox after Major League Baseball upheld his one-game suspension.

Bautista's appeal for his role in a May 15 brawl with the Texas Rangers was heard Thursday in New York.

He was suspended two days after the game at Globe Life Park in Arlington. The suspension was for his on-field actions and post-game comments, MLB said in a statement.

Ezequiel Carrera replaced Bautista in right field for the weekend series opener against the Red Sox at Rogers Centre.
