Police say a nine-year-old Ontario boy is recovering in hospital after having his throat cut by an assailant who is believed to be “well known” to him.

The incident occurred Saturday evening at a home on Mitchell Street, in the southwestern Ontario city of St. Thomas.

Officers found the boy bleeding from his neck, after receiving calls about an injured male at the location.

Paramedics transported the boy to St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, then transferred him to a children’s hospital in London, Ont. for emergency surgery.

The boy has undergone surgery and remains in stable condition, according to a Sunday bulletin issued by St. Thomas City Police Service.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder in connection with the attack. The victim and the suspect know each other well, police said.

The teenaged suspect has been remanded in police custody until Tuesday.
