WHITBY, Ont. - Two boys are charged following an investigation into a smoke grenade being set off in a high school cafeteria in Whitby, Ont.

Police say a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from Whitby and students at the school, are charged with mischief endangering life.

Investigators say a smoke grenade was ignited in a cafeteria filled with students during lunch period on June 13.

The high-output smoke grenade, commonly used by paintball enthusiasts, generated a large cloud of orange smoke.

Police say the incident put the safety of the students and staff at risk and could have resulted in serious injuries.

The school was evacuated as a safety precaution, but no injuries were reported.
