An Oshawa woman has been charged after a man who was waiting for a taxi in downtown Toronto was struck in a hit and run early Saturday morning.

Karen Fyfe, 31, has been arrested and charged with failure to stop, causing bodily harm.

Jay McGinn, 28, was struck by a vehicle while waiting for a taxi near Dundas Street and Augusta Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

He was waiting for passengers to get out of the taxi when he was struck by a westbound four-door Pontiac Grand Prix GT that fled the scene, police said.

Nigel Dunn, who told CP24 he witnessed the incident, said the victim was thrown about 40 feet in the air after he was struck by a female motorist who kept driving.

McGinn was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital, where he remained in critical condition on Monday.

On Sunday, McGinn's mother Lisa Falls told CTV Toronto that her son is suffering from severe head trauma and said the situation looks "grim."

"When you see your child with the (medical) paraphernalia that he has around him, the machines, it becomes real and it becomes devastating," Falls said.

Fyfe was arrested after a number of tips came in from members of the public who noticed her damaged vehicle, police said.

She appeared in court Monday morning and has been remanded into police custody until her next court appearance on Wednesday.
