A man is facing a charge of second-degree murder after a woman was found dead in an apartment building near Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood early Saturday morning.

Police responded to a call at 220 Oak St., near the intersection of Gerrard and River Streets, just before 6 a.m. Saturday.

Officers found the body of a young woman with “obvious trauma” inside one of the apartments, Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux said. She was found in the kitchen and a knife was found nearby.

The woman was identified Saturday evening as Natasha Perez, 28.

Brian Harte, 42, of Toronto has been charged with second-degree murder.

Giroux told reporters that a 911 call had come from inside the apartment where the victim was found.

During the 911 call, the accused made “incriminating comments,” he said.

“He made certain utterances with regards to what happened and when the police arrived he was taken into custody without incident,” Giroux said at the scene. “Those comments were all recorded and … will be entered into evidence.”

The accused was taken to 51 Division and will appear in court at Old City Hall on Sunday morning.

The victim has not yet been identified, but police will release the name once the family has been notified.

Police have not yet determined the nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim.

Residents of the apartment building told CTV Toronto that there have been crimes in the building in the past. In February, a man was shot multiple times in the same building.
