Students at York University want action from the school administration after a string of recent sexual assaults and other crimes have caused them to become concerned for their personal safety.
The most recent incident occurred early Thursday morning, when a woman living near the campus woke up to find a man in her bedroom.
Police allege the man was trying to steal her computer.
Police suspect the intruder entered into the girl’s bedroom through an open balcony door, after climbing down from the roof of the townhouse located on Assiniboine Road.
This latest break-and-enter comes just a week after police arrested a suspect in connection with a number of sexual assaults on the campus.
Five women have stepped forward claiming they were groped near Vari Hall, a main building on the campus that contains lecture halls, staff offices and student common spaces.
Oshane Leach, 20, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, two counts of harassment and two counts of assault.
Police are looking for a suspect in connection with Thursday’s break-and-enter, as well as a second suspect in connection with the sexual assaults.
All this has students at York and York’s affiliate school Seneca College wanting more from school officials.
In particular, many students expressed frustration at the administration for waiting four days before notifying the student body of the sexual assaults through a mass email.
Students also said that in the past, after some time had passed following a crime on campus, security usually returned to normal.
“When issues have died down at a certain point, security just goes back to regular services. So this needs to be a continuous event,” said student Anushka Walgama.
Police and school officials said they will be working to address student safety concerns in the wake of these incidents.
They have already increased the number of foot patrols, but for the time being there are no plans to increase security measures again.
