Pledging to eat healthy and get plenty of exercise tops many people's New Year's resolutions, and is also one of the hardest to maintain.

For Torontonian Harry Gwartz, 2012 is the year he is buckling down. Gwartz signed up for a one-year membership at a yoga studio and has taken up weightlifting.

"Between the buffet and the open bar and the barbecue, it just sort of happened," Gwartz told CTV Toronto.

Nutrition expert Theresa Albert says that food is one of the most important parts of becoming and staying healthy.

She urged people to eat beans for fibre, vegetables for their nutrients and said that lean proteins such as fish and chicken breasts are crucial.

Some other tips on getting healthy:

  • Use smaller plates and glasses
  • Track and measure your waistline
  • Write and track your meals in a journal
  • Set realistic goals based on your schedule and lifestyle

Top five healthy vegetables:

  • Kale
  • Collard greens
  • Spinach
  • Red pepper
  • Sweet potato/yams
