ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- A 70-year-old man has been charged following a gas leak on Wednesday afternoon that forced an evacuation in a St. Catharines, Ont., neighbourhood.

Niagara Region police allege a resident "purposely cut a gas line" in his residence, causing natural gas to escape into the surrounding area.

Residents from neighbouring homes (on Green Maple Drive) were evacuated until firefighters were able to shut off the supply of gas to the residence.

Police say no one was injured and the residents were allowed to return home a short time later.

Thomas McMillan is charged with one count of mischief endangering life and was being held for a bail hearing.
