A body has been discovered in an abandoned building near Bathurst and Dupont streets following a two-alarm blaze early Monday morning, a representative with Toronto Fire Services has confirmed.

Firefighters were called to the fire at 1002 Bathurst St., which has apartments over ground-floor commercial space, shortly before 5 a.m.

Crews battled the blaze for about an hour before it was brought under control.

Toronto Fire Services spokesman Mike Strapko said fire crews encountered “heavy” flames on the second floor, where the fire originated.

Flames eventually spread into the attic.

Neighbouring buildings were evacuated as a precaution and fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the abandoned building, platoon chief Kevin Shaw said.

During the subsequent investigation into the cause of the fire, a body was discovered inside the building, Strapko said.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Details on the sex or age of the deceased were not provided by officials.
